Recycle your junk!

I hope you are all having a lovely break and enjoying the beautiful weather!

As part of or learning next term we will be thinking about recycling and we will be creating some art using recycled materials. Please can you start saving anything colourful such as bottle tops, buttons, shiny sweet papers etc. We will be using the materials in about 3 weeks time - I will remind you all again in about a fortnight!

See you all on Monday to start another busy , fun-filled term!
Thank you

What happens when chocolate is heated?

We wanted to make some spooky crispie cakes for Winnie. We looked at the chocolate and margarine before and after heating and tried to use the language we have been using.  Ask the children to tell you when they saw a solid or a liquid.
As you can see we have some candidates for the next Great British Bake Off!

Mountain Bike Fun

Do you want to eat as much turkey and chocolate as you like this winter without feeling guilty?!! Even if you have very little experience of being on a mountain bike then please consider doing the ‘SPAM Winter Challenge’ with Team Southbroom, at  this well-organised event in Erlestoke on Sun 28th December. (Find SPAM on Facebook).
We will be providing training rides and advice in the months leading up to the ride. There will be weekday rides from 6pm, and possible Sunday rides. If you are slow or unfit you will NOT be left behind.
We will need a minimum of 10 riders. So please let us know before Weds 22nd October, the start of half-term.
We will be in contact shortly after the closing date.

Many Thanks, Mr O’Reilly

Finding out about wool

As part of our learning about materials we wanted to find out how the wool from a sheep is changed into a jumper.
Mrs Davis showed us a fleece and then described how this is treated and changed into thread to knit with. We loved watching the spinning wheel!
Ask the children to show you how they added air to the wool and twisted a strong thread.

King James I

Today in history we started to learn about king James I and his hatred of the Catholics . We had an interesting discussion about tolerance and a even more interesting discussion about how the Catholics should deal with the King! We then did some role play......... Clark made a terrifying King who showed no mercy to his begging catholic subjects!

How can we work that out?

                                                          12  +  25

Today in numeracy we were learning how to add two 2 digit numbers . The children worked in pairs - they had to write which strategy they would use, then use apparatus and finally draw the calculation . Ask the children to see if they can explain their method.

How can you change an object?

This afternoon we have enjoyed investigating how materials can be changed.
Can we squash, stretch, bend or twist them?
There were some interesting ideas when we looked around the room for other things to change. How could you change a drawer? Open it!

Harvest Celebrations

Thank you for all the contributions you have made for our harvest collection for Devizes Food Bank. We are collecting donations during next week too.

Mrs Martin and Miss Elson did a fantastic harvest assembly today. Look at the picture below and ask the children to tell you what the theme of the assembly was.

A big thank you to Jo and the other ladies in the kitchen for a delicious harvest lunch.

Homework 2.10.14

We are trying to teach the children to make their writing interesting by adding ‘Wow’ words (describing words- adjectives and adverbs).

Winnie is making a shopping list for items she needs to put in a spell. Think of 10 things she needs to buy. Every item should have a describing word  (or two)!   e.g.   three slimy green frogs. Write the items in a list, one underneath the other.
Please hand homework in no later than Wednesday 8th October.   Have fun

Colourful Cats! Updated

Today in art we created some cat pictures in the style of the artist Laurel Birch. Her work is both colourful and symmetrical. We certainly managed to recreate the colourful- for some the symmetrical was a little bit more tricky !
